The Legacy 500 is a super midsize jet built by the Brazialian aerospace company, Embraer. The company’s stated mission is to bring to all levels of business jets the amenities typically only found in larger more expensive jets. The Legacy 500 continues to fulfil this mission with its entry to the super midsize category.
Embraer developed the Legacy 450 (for the midsize category) and the larger Legacy 500 together for production and delivery in 2013 and 2012 respectively but the 500 has experienced delays and is due to enter service in 2014. While the 450 ‘set the bar’ in many ways for the midsize category, the Legacy 500 is being touted as “the new beginning” for super midsize executive jets.
The Legacy 500 is a “clean-sheet” design meaning it is not developed by modifying from another previous aircraft; it is a wholly new design. In doing so, Embraer replaced conventional controls with a full fly-by-wire system. This gives pilots greater control, increased cockpit comfort, and reduced workload. Embraer claims that maneuvers that were once not considered, for example steep descents, short field landings and takeoffs, are a regular feature. The advanced avionics package is based on the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion but is designed specifically for the Legacy 500.
As with the Legacy 450, the interior was designed in collaboration with BMW Designworks and the result has been described as one of striking beauty yet immensely practical. Passengers enjoy a 6-foot-tall and nearly 7-foot-wide cabin with fully berthable seats, and nicely positioned windows that are the largest in their class. Currently, the Legacy 500 features the most spacious cabin in its class, providing an expansive and complete working and living space.
Technical specifications are as follows:
The Legacy 500 has two Honeywell HFT7500E engines rated at 6,540 lb thrust each.
Performance specifications are as follows:
The 500 has a maximum cruise speed of 608 mph (978 km/h). The range with four passengers is 3,452mi (5,555km) and with eight passengers the range is 3,337mi (5,370km).
Dimension specifications are as follows:
The 500 overall length is 67 ft 4 in (20.52 m) and height is 22ft 1in (6.7 m). The aircraft has a wingspan of 66ft 5in (20.25m). The external baggage compartment can hold 110 cubic feet and the internal compartment can hold 40 cubic feet.
Weight specifications are as follows:
The 500 has a maximum takeoff weight of 42,000 lb (19,051 kg) with a maximum payload of 4,800lb (2,177kg).
Internal specifications are as follows:
The 500 cabin length is 26ft 8in, width is 6ft 10in, and height is 6 ft. There is an internal baggage compartment which can hold another 40 cubic feet (in addition to the 110 cubic ft external compartment). The cabin can seat up to twelve passengers with a crew of two although the corporate seating configuration is typically for eight passengers. Eight passenger seating configurations include two four-place club arrangements or a single four-place club with option of one or two 3-seat divans.
The 500 features the largest lavatory in its class, a fully galley, and the Honeywell Ovation Select Cabin Connection Suite which provides everything you need to run your business or take relaxation to the next level. Connectivity features full HD video system, surround audio, and high definition media input. Individual seats also have nearby electrical outlets, individual touch-pad controls for climate control and entertainment systems, flat screen monitors, and fold out tables. With other amenities too numerous to mention, suffice to say that Embraer’s cabin creates a feeling of tranquility and open space. You are sure to arrive at your destination relaxed and refreshed.
