The Gulfstream G280 is a super mid-size, long range business jet built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for Gulfstream Aerospace. The G280 project was conceived in 2005 as an upgrade to the G200. The new model was first launched as the G250 in 2008 and the first deliveries were made in 2012.
In 2011 the G250 was renamed the Gulfstream G280. The decision to rename the aircraft was based solely on marketing strategy; there were no modifications to the aircraft. Simply put, the Gulfstream G280 designation was determined to be more appealing to other cultures, specifically the Chinese.
The G280 is Gulfstream’s newest aircraft in production and being such, it has the latest advancements in technology, performance, and comfort to make it a best-in-class aircraft.
The Gulsftream G280 likely has the longest range at the fastest cruising speed for its category. Additionally, the aircraft has impressive field performance allowing it to use airports with short runways or other difficult access. The G280 features a new larger wing with the airfoil design from the Gulfstream G550 aircraft and a new tail with larger stabilizers. The more powerful Honeywell engines deliver an astounding 7,624 lb thrust each to allow the aircraft to climb directly to its high speed cruising altitude of 45,000 ft, well above commercial traffic and weather.
The G280 also has a larger cabin area than its predecessor with four more windows and internal access to the baggage compartment. More natural light and the 100 percent fresh air infused into the cabin creates a comfortable environment and reduces fatigue whether you’re at work or rest. The Gulfstream Cabin Management System with its iPod touch operating platform enables the passengers to create the cabin environment desired at the touch of a finger. Temperature, lights, entertainment, and other cabin systems are controlled through the intuitive interface. Moreover, the Cabin Management System is designed with complete redundancy so you don’t lose any other functionalities because of any single point of failure.
The cockpit avionics suite is the PlaneView280™, which is based on Rockwell Collins ProLine Fusion avionics and is considered by many to be the most advanced flight deck in its class. The PlaneView280™ interactive controls and interfaces reduce pilot workload and its advanced graphics improve pilot situational awareness. The latest technologies are incorporated into heads-up display, advanced vision systems, and brake-by-wire systems to create a safer environment in any weather systems and improve passenger comfort.
