The Bombardier Challenger 604 is a large cabin transcontinental jet produced by Bombardier from 1996 to 2006. It is the third generation of aircraft in the highly successful 600 series of business jets initially developed in the mid 1970’s. The Challenger 604 resulted from a major upgrade of the Challenger 601 design which itself was a significant upgrade in performance from the first 600 model. The 601 was launched in 1982 and over its production lifetime there were a number of variants introduced which extended range and increased operational weights. These refinements made the Challenger 601 capable of transoceanic range while preserving the spacious cabin for which the Challenger 600 Series is renown. These incremental changes eventually led to the design and certification of the Challenger 604 in 1995.
In addition to sporting the more advanced GE CF34-3B engines, the Challenger 604 features numerous and significant design changes such as increased fuel capacity, improved undercarriage for higher takeoff and landing weights, structural improvements to the tail and wings, and and a new avionics system including Collins ProLine 4 all-glass cockpit.
Together these improvements provide transcontinental range for eight passengers at speeds in the range of .74 Mach. At a more economical cruising speed, the jet can travel legs of over 4600 miles. Flight crews enjoy the numerous pilot-friendly features which contribute to the relative ease and comfort of flying this jet. As a testament to the huge success of this aircraft with pilots and operators, Bombardier produced 347 Challenger 604s in its ten year production run.
In 2006 Bombardier introduced the Challenger 605 as the successor to the Challenger 604. The main features that distinguish the 605 are upgraded avionics and some structural changes incorporated primarily to improve the passenger experience.
With uncompromising emphasis on style, sophistication, and comfort the Challenger 604 continues to provide excellent range and speed for the transcontinental passenger.
